Red Heart Super Saver or any worsted weight

Gauge:
with I (5.50mm) hook and worsted weight (#4) yarn
Double Crochet, 14 sts by 8 rows = 4 inch square

special stitches:
fdc = foundation double crochet
fpdc = front post double crochet
bpdc = back post double crochet

note:
Chain 2 does not count as stitch at beginning of rounds, it is merely to help the stitch get to proper height.

I wrote the instructions as for one color, but stripes are really easy to make a more colorful hat; cut the first yarn after slip stitch join. Join next color as slip stitch in same join; ch 2 as usual and continue as instructed for row. Weave in ends as you go to keep the task easier at the end.

Round 1: is a foundation row constructed of 27 fdc; make sure not to twist joining last fdc to first fdc. (27 sts)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch, dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts* ; repeat from * to * around. Slip stitch join to first dc. (36 sts)

Round 3: ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch, dc in next 3 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts* ; repeat from * to * around. Slip stitch join to first dc. (45 sts)

Round 4: ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch, dc in next 4 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts* ; repeat from * to * around. Slip stitch join to first dc. (54 sts)

Round 5: ch 2, dc in in each st around. Slip stitch join to first dc. (54 sts)

Round 6: ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch, dc in next 8 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 8 sts* ; repeat from * to * around. Slip stitch join to first dc. (60 sts)

Round 7: ch 2, 2 dc in same stitch, dc in next 9 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 9 sts* ; repeat from * to * around. Slip stitch join to first dc. (66 sts)

Rounds 8-11: ch 2, dc in each st around. Slip stitch join to first dc. (66 sts)

Rounds 12- 16: ch 2, *fpdc, bpdc*; repeat from * to * around. Slip stitch join to first fpdc. (66 sts) On round 16 end with an invisible join to the first fpdc.

Weave in ends. Block if necessary.
